Episcopal Day School students visit Cancer Center

Augusta, Ga. — Students from Episcopal Day School spent the morning of Wednesday, March 2, touring the Cancer Center at Augusta University. Approximately 40 8th grade students visited clinical and research facilities and met with physicians and scientists. They also learned about the biology of cancer, how it can be prevented, and how the Cancer Center’s faculty and staff are actively combating the disease.

Dr. Samir N. Khleif, director of the Cancer Center, kicked the morning off. While the EDS program represented a first for the Cancer Center, he hopes it will not be the last.

“The very best way to interest students in science is to show them how it works,” he said. “The things they saw and experienced are as powerful as anything they have learned in a traditional classroom setting or a book. It was a pleasure to be able to offer them this experience.”

The Cancer Center at Augusta University is a multi-disciplinary academic cancer center focused on both research and clinical treatment. Its patient-centered approach to treatment includes first-in-the-nation treatment protocols, an experimental therapeutics program that includes specialized clinics for Phase I clinical trials and immunotherapy and a variety of ancillary programs – including nutritional and genetic counseling – designed with holistic healing in mind.
