A message from the Chief Diversity Officer

It has come to our attention that sidewalk messages in support of National Coming Out Day were altered on the Summerville campus. National Coming Out Day is one of many events the Office of Diversity and Inclusion will co-sponsor with student organizations in an effort to not only recognize, but to celebrate the rich diversity to which the entire GRU family contributes.  We understand that actions which do not embrace our diversity may be hurtful to members of our university community.

Georgia Regents University is committed to ensuring that our campuses remain safe and we encourage students, faculty and staff to uphold the institution’s core values by maintaining a positive learning environment for everyone.

We believe that everyone has the right to express their beliefs in a safe and supportive environment, with mutual respect and courtesy of others. These incidents should remind each of us that we must be diligent in our commitment to maintain an inclusive campus environment.

In the coming months, I will be meeting with student organizations to further explore the challenges but most importantly the opportunities we as an institution have to cultivate the type of environment where all students are supported and welcoming of the diverse perspectives which are at the heart of higher education.  Additionally, I will be meeting with faculty to discuss ways in which we can grow both socially and academically by fostering an inclusive climate in our educational experiences and in our interactions with one another.

Thank you for your commitment to excellence in making our institution a valued and impactful university for all.
