Student volunteers share ‘Lessons in a Lunchbox’ at National Children’s Dental Health Month event

The Student National Dental Association (SNDA) collaborated with the Children’s Oral Health Institute to present the Lessons In A Lunch Box: Healthy Teeth Essentials & Fact About Snacks program to 192 students at Monte Sano Elementary School on February 6.

Lessons in a Lunch Box: Healthy Teeth Essentials & Facts About Snacks is an oral health literacy program designed to empower children and their families with the proper knowledge about routine dental care, oral health maintenance and good dietary choices using a “dentally designed” lunch box.

Twenty-six volunteer students from the Dental College of Georgia and the College of Allied Health Sciences students along with Dr. Carole Hanes and Dr. Monica Chana, screened an animated film about oral health care, presented the donated lunchboxes and demonstrated proper brushing and flossing techniques. Those lunchboxes, with information in English, Spanish and braille, contained a plastic carrot case filled with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss and a rinse cup to encourage kids to take care of their teeth and eat healthy foods. The students of Monte Sano Elementary were thrilled to receive the lunchboxes and enthusiastic about improving their oral hygiene habits.

Ms. Cindy Scoggins, principal of Monte Sano Elementary, was also happy with the success of the event and looks forward to partnering with DCG again to continue increasing oral health care literacy in the school systems.
