Give Kids a Smile brings dental care to kids in need

The Dental College of Georgia treated the most children in its 16-year history of “Give Kids a Smile,” held Friday, Feb. 1, with 120 children attending the event from four area elementary schools.

Dental students, dental hygiene students, faculty and staff teamed up to deliver free dental care that included 102 cleanings, 96 fluoride applications, 212 sealants, 15 fillings, 4 crowns, 16 extractions and 32 x-rays. The value of the care equated to about $35,000 in dental services. The children waited in a “party room” this year where they could color, watch dental movies, and dance to music being played. There was also a photo booth with fun dental props.

“[The DCG’s] professionals and students provided both a level of and access to dental care that many of these children have never had,” said Laurie Cook, executive director for Communities in Schools. “I can only imagine the dental relief that some of the students are now experiencing thanks to your good works!”

The annual event was coordinated by Jennifer VanCise, administrative assistant, and Dr. Bruce Riggs, associate professor, in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry. Cook was instrumental in coordinating the permission slips, transportation and lunches with VanCise to help make this year’s production run smoothly.
