Gage Patton’s Walk-Off Hit Wills Jags To 8-7 Win In Extras

Fighting back from an early 6-0 deficit, the Jaguars got a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning from freshman Gage Patton to steal an 8-7 victory and sweep the Peach Belt Conference series from the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes Sunday at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

The Jaguars (12-16, 6-9 PBC) went down 2-0 early to GSW (9-23, 2-19 PBC) off three hits in the first inning on Jaguar starter David Hagelston. The freshman righty made his sixth start and seventh appearance on the mound, surrendering nine hits for six runs.

Down 6-0, the Jags went to lefty Frank Warren on the mound. The GRU offense produced their first run of the game on a fielder’s choice from Kevin Dodson that scored Connor Gilbert from third.

After scoring the lone run in the sixth, the Jags used two walks to get runners on base before Drew Taylor singled, Cole Thompson doubled, and Connor Gilbert tripled to make it a two run game. Freshman Jim Wagner recorded a sacrifice fly to left field that allowed Gilbert to score for a 7-6 affair.

Warren logged 5.0 innings and only gave up one run on seven hits. He struck out five, giving the Jags a fighting chance still down by one heading into the eighth inning. GRU left runners on the corners in the eighth and Tyler Brown took over the mound to help the Jags keep the one-run game intact.

Brown did just that and the Jags tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on an error from the third baseman who sailed a throw into right field to score Bradley Dennis. Kevin Dodson started the inning with a single to spark the rally.

Gilbert reached on a throwing error in the 10th and Wagner moved him on a single to the right side. Patton lined a hit up the middle to plated Gilbert for the win and the series sweep.

Taylor, Gilbert, and Wagner each went 2-4 with one RBI on the day. Cole Thompson had an RBI as did Dodson. Brown (3-3) got the win in 2.2 innings, allowing four hits and striking out one.

The Jaguars host Georgia Gwinnett College for a non-conference single game on Monday, March 30 at 4:00 p.m. in Lake Olmstead Stadium.
