CURS Workshops provide expert advice, useful tips for undergraduate researchers

The Augusta University Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship will host a number of CURS Research Workshops throughout the remainder of the 2016 fall semester.

Held on Tuesdays from 3-4 p.m. in University Hall, Room 247, the workshops cover a range of topics for students participating or looking to participate in undergraduate research on campus and are an invaluable research for students and faculty alike.

The workshops are as follows:

Oct. 4 – Ethical Issues in Health Research

This workshop will highlight important ethical issues that arise in conducting health research in communities and clinical settings.

By the end of the workshop, undergraduate students should be able to:

• Distinguish between utilitarian and Kantian theories of morality.
• Identify four principles of biomedical ethics.
• Identify two sets of ethics guidelines for epidemiologists, psychologists and biomedical researchers.
• List the elements of informed consent.
• Explain the importance of IRB review.

This workshop will be presented by Dr. Steven Coughlin, associate professor of Clinical and Digital Sciences. Coughlin has published four books on ethical issues in epidemiology, public health and clinical research.

Oct. 18 – Finding Scholarly Literature

This workshop will guide students through the process of finding scholarly literature from experts in their given field.

This workshop will be presented by Dr. Fay Verburg, assistant professor and chair of Reference and Education Services.

Nov. 1 – Publishing in the Augusta Arsenal

This workshop will educate and inform undergraduate students about the process of publishing scholarly literature in The Arsenal, Augusta University’s undergraduate research magazine.
