Augusta University to host Correctional Health Research Symposium

Augusta University’s Institute of Public and Preventive Health will host the Correctional Health Research Program Symposium on Tuesday, May 10 from 10 a.m-3 p.m. in the J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons McKnight Room.

The symposium’s theme is “Public Health and Incarceration: Social Justice Matters.”

Dr. Warren J. Ferguson, professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at University of Massachusetts Medical School, will deliver the keynote address.

In addition to providing a forum for current research into the field of public health, the symposium will also commemorate the release of the latest issue of Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved. The official journal of the Association of Clinicians for the Underserved (ACU), the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved is a peer-reviewed journal focusing on contemporary health care issues of medically underserved communities.

Attendees Dr. Ronald L. Braithwaite, professor in the Department of Community Health & Preventive Medicine and the Department of Psychiatry at Morehouse School of Medicine, and Dr. Selina Smith, director of IPPH, both served as guest editors for the journal’s May issue.

Lunch will be served and 100 complimentary copies of the Journal of Health Care for the Poor and Underserved will be given away. IPPH will also provide a light breakfast before the start of the symposium at 9:30 a.m.
