AU Police urges caution during 15th Street road work

Augusta University Police urges everyone on the Health Sciences Campus to use extra caution over the next several months as 15th Street road work has begun.

In cooperation with the Georgia Department of Transportation, the City of Augusta will be making improvements on 15th Street from the John C. Calhoun Expressway to Central Avenue.

“Please pay attention to temporary lane shifts and closures, as well as pedestrians, while driving,” said Chief Jim Lyon. “This construction will cause intermittent driving delays along 15th Street, so we encourage you to plan ahead for this.”

One travel lane on each side of 15th will be closed and turn lanes are being adjusted. Left turns onto 15th Street will be restricted to the Walton Way, Harper Street and Laney-Walker Boulevard traffic signals. The only exception will be for cars making a left into the hospital driveway at Entrance 3, which leads to the Medical Center Parking Deck (P1).

Barriers are in place to restrict left turns onto 15th Street when exiting the hospital driveway.

JagExpress Shuttle routes could take a few minutes longer than usual due to traffic rerouting, especially the Lot 55 and Green routes.

“With the increased work activity along the 15th Street corridor, it is now more important than ever to only use designated crosswalks for crossing the street,” Lyon said. The chief also recommends you take a few extra seconds to be sure drivers see you before attempting to cross and utilize crossing signals where available.

According to the Project Sheet on the city’s website, the bulk of work on 15th Street will be pedestrian improvements, which include building raised islands at several intersections to provide pedestrian refuge, reconstructing existing ADA ramps and adding ramps where needed to meet current standards, repainting crosswalks, and installing audible crossings signals at two major intersections.
