Strike Out Stroke raises awareness during GreenJackets game

Augusta University along with The American Heart Association (AHA) and the Augusta Greenjackets is hosting “Strike Out Stroke” on May 21 at SRP Park. Those who attend the game will be able to learn more about the symptoms of stroke by engaging in interactive stroke related activities.

Located in the heart of the stroke belt, Augusta University Medical Center is the area’s only Joint Commission-certified Advanced Comprehensive Stroke Center. Patients in rural Georgia hospitals have fast access to quality stroke care at AU Medical Center through REACH Health, Inc., a telemedicine program pioneered at Augusta University’s Medical College of Georgia that allows neurologists to diagnose and treat stroke patients remotely.

At the game, there will be stations set up that will simulate stroke symptoms like how one’s leg strength could be effected, difficulty speaking and a station preventing you from seeing peripherally, which is typically a missed symptom. Participants will also have the opportunity to have their blood pressure taken at the game.

Cards will be given to all participants as a way to check off each completed simulation, and those cards will later be used in a raffle for a new bicycle donated by the AHA.

The Augusta GreenJackets will play the Charleston RiverDogs at 7:05 pm. For more information about the event, contact Holly Hula or call (706)721-4086.
