AU Police cut ribbon on new substation, conduct safety sessions

On Thursday, March 22, James Lyon, chief of the Augusta University Police Department, cut the ribbon for a new Augusta University police substation in the lobby of Allgood Hall on the Summerville Campus.

The substation gives officers a place to take care of administrative work that’s both visible and convenient.

“This is right in line with our efforts to engage the university community in a non-enforcement way,” Lyon said. “This is a high profile, high traffic area, and we can be here, be seen and be approachable while we’re doing our reports.”

The ribbon cutting was accompanied by a Coffee with a Cop event that was later moved to the health fair being held at the D. Douglas Barnard Jr. Amphitheatre.

A similar Coffee with a Cop/safety session will occur from 9:30 — 11 a.m. on Friday, March 23, in the lobby of the J. Harold Harrison, M.D. Education Commons on the Health Sciences Campus.

Officers and representatives from the Office of Critical Events Preparedness and Response (CEPaR) will be:

  • conducting how-to sessions for installing and using the RAVE Guardian App.
  • assisting faculty, staff and students with updating or correcting their emergency contact information, which is a vital part of ensuring important emergency information can be delivered via the JagAlert system.
  • signing up people for Rape Aggression Defense (RAD) training, a free 12-hour basic physical defense class offered by the Augusta University Police Department.
