Georgia ranks among the top 15 states in the nation for the number of murders committed by men against women, according to data released by the Violence Policy Center Annual Report. Of those murders, most stem from domestic violence.

Even so, fewer than one quarter of all cases of intimate partner violence and one-fifth of all rapes are reported to law enforcement agencies.

In response to the growing need for domestic violence education and awareness, Augusta University will host “Caminar Latino in Augusta: Steps Against Dating and Domestic Violence” on Thursday, Nov. 9 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the JSAC Ballroom.

Jessica Nunan, director of Caminar Latino, will deliver the keynote address. Based out of Atlanta, Caminar Latino works daily to reduce domestic violence within Georgia’s Hispanic community.

Nunan’s presentation will identify challenges faced by immigrant survivors of dating and domestic violence and steps everyone can take to reduce domestic violence on campus and in our community.

Representatives from SafeHomes of Augusta Domestic Violence Center, Asociación Latina de Servicios del CSRA, and the Hispanic Business Alliance will also present during the event. Local organizations that provide healthcare and other services to victims of domestic violence will also be present to share information.

This event is sponsored by The Center for Public Service and Research and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion.

Registration is free. Lunch will be provided to the first 100 online registrants.
