Free diabetes screenings will be offered Nov. 3

More than 800,000 people in Georgia are living with diabetes, the sixth leading cause of death among adults, according to the Department of Community Health. What’s more, diabetes and prediabetes increase your cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.

In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month in November, Augusta University Medical Center’s diabetes nurse champions are holding a free Diabetes Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3, in the lobby of the Children’s Hospital of Georgia. The fair will include complimentary health screenings for:
  • Blood glucose
  • Blood pressure
  • Pulse
  • Height/Weight/BMI (body mass index)

“More than one-third of adults in America have prediabetes, and most of them don’t even know it,” said Jenny Grimm, a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator. “A person with prediabetes is at increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes. But making lifestyle changes could prevent diabetes and improve your future health.”

The event is open to everyone, especially faculty, staff and students. You can also sign up to win door prizes from local businesses and restaurants.

For more information on the Diabetes Health Fair, or if you have questions for a diabetes educator, please email Jenny Grimm.
