Greenspan becomes president of Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging

Dr. Bennett S. Greenspan, a professor in the Department of Radiology and Imaging at the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University, is the new president of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging.

The society is an international scientific and medical organization dedicated to raising public awareness of the field that adds another dimension to diagnosing diseases, changing the way common ailments are understood and treated. Its 17,000 members help create guidelines and lead advocacy on key issues affecting molecular imaging and therapy research and practice.

Greenspan, who joined the MCG faculty in 2012, was named the group’s vice president elect in 2015.

“As SNMMI president, in the year ahead I will focus on the new Value Initiative and strategic plan, which emphasize quality of practice; research and development, strengthening education and the workforce pipeline; advocacy for molecular imaging, nuclear medicine and targeted therapy procedures that improve patient care; and outreach that explains the field’s critical role in modern medicine,” Greenspan said.

A society member since 1981, he received the group’s Academic Council’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. He served as an at-large member of its Board of Directors from 2007-13, and has served on its Academic Council since 2004, including two terms as president. His current responsibilities include serving on the Practice Standards, Quality Assurance, and Molecular Imaging Education Task Forces. He is longtime chair of the Procedure Guideline for Parathyroid Scintigraphy, a diagnostic test that uses a radioactive chemical.

He also served on the society’s Joint Government Relations Committee with the American College of Nuclear Physicians. Greenspan also completed a term as the society’s representative to the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Computed Tomography Laboratories and as chair of the Committee on Councils and Centers.

Other professional activities include serving on the board, and as a former president, of the American Board of Science in Nuclear Medicine. He is a former item writer for the American Board of Radiology’s written board exams and serves on the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board. This year, Greenspan also received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American College of Nuclear Medicine.

He is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago and subsequently received a master’s degree in medical physics from the University of California, Los Angeles.
