Augusta University Academic Success Center (ASC) is offering one-on-one coaching sessions and a wide range of workshops to help students become effective, self-regulated learners.
Workshop topics include note taking, time management, study skills, utilizing textbooks and more.
Unlike academic advisors, who focus on planning curriculum and meeting graduation requirements, academic coaches address topics like learning strategies, life management skills and earning strong grades.
A growing body of research indicates coaching helps students with the transition from high school to college.
“Coaching is a great mechanism to help students reach their academic potential,” said Jerry Oliver, the first full-time academic coach at the ASC. “A few relatively small changes can make a big difference in their course grade.”
Dr. Lorraine Evans, the executive director of the ASC, agreed.
“The response to our workshops so far has been very positive,” she said. “Student evaluations indicate they find them very useful, and the comments include requests for more.”
