Freshman Convocation welcomes Class of 2020 with pomp and picnic

On Tuesday, August 16, incoming freshmen will experience a day of fun, food and reflection at the Freshman Convocation event, the official welcome to the Class of 2020.

The Convocation ceremony begins at 11 a.m. at the Maxwell Theatre on the Summerville Campus. This year’s theme – the theme for the Class of 2020 – is Inclusivity, which is one of Augusta University’s core values.

After a guest speaker, a special “pinning” ceremony will occur. From there, students will head to the field next to Science Hall for the official class photo.

Following the photo, President Brooks Keel and Provost Gretchen Caughman will host the annual President’s Picnic, where students will have the opportunity to learn more about Augusta University while meeting future professors in a relaxed and informal setting.

From there, all freshmen are required to attend Freshman 1101: Making the Transition to College Successfully. It’s the first official class these students will take at Augusta University and it will introduce them to student leaders who will give valuable advice on how to make the transition from high school to college.

Finally, a reception from 2:30 – 3 p.m. on the Maxwell’s porch brings an end to the day – and the delivery of the Class of 2020 photo.
