Augusta University’s new alumni magazine debuts

A cover1Augusta University alumni are about to get a pleasant surprise.

Hitting mailboxes on Thursday, A. replaces GRavity as the university’s flagship magazine.

According to Karen Gutmann, director of news and information, the redesign is a fresh take on the traditional alumni magazine.

“Alumni magazines often don’t make it beyond the first thumb-through,” Gutmann said. “We wanted to give our readers something they’d want to keep around for a while – something they’d be happy to leave out on the coffee table or keep on the nightstand.”

With new sections, bolder photography and a greater emphasis on storytelling, A. is a newsstand-quality publication tailored for the Augusta University family.

“We looked at dozens of award-winning alumni magazines and modified some of the best ideas to fit our unique needs,” Gutmann said. “We think we’ve settled on a style that reflects our campus and our alumni.”

Though the redesign process began well before the university’s name change last December, the magazine’s new name was obviously no accident. After entertaining several options, one name – or letter – emerged as the clear favorite.

“A is the top grade, it’s the first letter of our city and it represents our university in a way that is immediately recognizable to anyone who has ever been part of it,” she said. “Plus, we figured if the rest of the university was bringing its A Game, we should be, too.”

While the print magazine goes out to alumni, anyone can access the digital version and all its web exclusives at Augusta University’s magazine site, the Fine Print.
