From death row to civil rights legend, former Freedom Rider to speak at Augusta University

Event:

Civil rights activist Joan Trumpauer Mulholland will be the keynote speaker at the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday Celebration hosted by Augusta University, Paine College and Augusta Technical College.

Background:

Mulholland’s unwavering fight for civil rights as a Freedom Rider brought her face-to-face with the Ku Klux Klan and sent her to the  Mississippi’s State Penitentiary, where she spent time on death row. She also participated in pivotal events in the civil rights movement including the March on Washington, which she helped organize, and the Woolworth’s lunch counter sit-in in Mississippi in 1963.

Time and location:

Noon Friday, Augusta University, Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre.
