Robinson named to Garrison Distinguished Chair

AUGUSTA, GA. – Dr. Vincent J.B. Robinson, a professor of medicine and radiology and director of the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship Program at the Medical College of Georgia, has been named Glen E. Garrison, MD Distinguished Chair in Cardiovascular Medicine.

The Garrison Chair is named for the former MCG chairman of Community Medicine and professor of medicine, who helped design the first coronary care unit for the Eugene Talmadge Memorial Hospital, the medical school’s teaching hospital. Garrison also served as director of Continuing Education and Continuing Medical Education and currently practices cardiology at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center.

Robinson joined the faculty of the state’s medical school in 1994 from the Moncton Hospital in Moncton, New Brunswick, and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. A nuclear cardiologist, his research focuses on provoked D-dimer tests, which involve providing clot-dissolving drugs to increase the effectiveness of the clot-detecting D-dimer test. A better test would decrease the number of patients who receive a false positive and help them avoid more costly and potentially risky tests.

Robinson earned a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery degree from the University of the West Indies at Mona, Jamaica, and completed postdoctoral training at Kingston Regional Hospital in Jamaica. He went on to complete an internal medicine residency at Dalhousie University’s Victoria General Hospital and a cardiology and nuclear cardiology fellowship at the University of Calgary in Canada.

He served as chief of the Section of Cardiology at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center from 1994-96 and has been co-director of the MCG nuclear cardiology program since 2003. He has served as a clinical research mentor for the Department of Biostatistics’ Clinical Translational Sciences Program for the last nine years.

Robinson holds three provisional patents related to provoked d-dimer testing. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada and the American College of Cardiology. He is a founding member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association’s Council for Clinical Cardiology and the American Federation for Medical Research.
