Lecture to look at Muslims in China

As part of the Chinese Language and Culture Faculty Lecture Series, Dr. Sandrine Catris, a research professor in the Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, will present “Revolution and Migration in China’s Muslim West, 1949-1976” at 2:30 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Coffeehouse, Summerville Campus, on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

Catris, an expert in Chinese history whose research is on 20th century China, particularly the Maoist years, said there are about 20 million Muslims in China living in different ethnic groups.

“There is a very long history of Islam in China that goes back all the way to the Tang dynasty,” Catris said. “There are Muslims in most major cities.”

Other lectures in the series include “Changing China: Through the Eyes of a Visitor 1989-2013” on March 24 and “From Beijing to Hong Kong: Two American Faculty Members’ Experiences Traveling in China” on April 16.

Additional lectures in the series will occur March 24 and April 16.

All lectures in the series are free and open to the public.
