February 25: Brown vs. Board of Education: A Panel on School Segregation and Integration

A little over 60 years ago, the Supreme Court ruled that school segregation was illegal in the landmark case of Brown vs. Board of Education. Join us as we listen to the stories of African-Americans who experienced school segregation and those whose lives were transformed by school integration. A reception will follow the panel.

March 7: Christopher O’Riley with the GRU Orchestra and Women’s Choral Ensemble

Christopher O’Riley, host of NPR’s From the Top, the most popular classical radio show ever, comes to the Maxwell Theatre stage March 7th. Although he is known to millions as a radio host, he is also a world renowned concert pianist, appearing with major orchestras including the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and many more. O’Riley is not only at home with Classical music. With the triumphant release of “True Love Waits”, O’Riley’s re-imagining of works by Radiohead, he garnered critical accolades and international acclaim, including the only four-star review ever given by Rolling Stone to a classical pianist. A true cross-over artist, O’Riley has also arranged and performed pieces by R.E.M., Pink Floyd, Nirvana, and Elliott Smith.

His Georgia Regents University concert will feature crossover solo works from his CD “Out of My Hands”. He will perform Joni Mitchell pieces with the GRU Women’s Choral Ensemble. To conclude, he will be joined by the GRU Orchestra for the powerful Grieg Piano Concerto an audience favorite.
